Yesterday it was announced that the State of Illinois will stop its use of solitary confinement for youth in their custody. The agreement was reached after the ACLU filed a federal lawsuit on behalf of youth in that state. Much like what happened in Ohio last year, this addresses use of seclusion on the state level. In Ohio there is still no law that prevents this from happening. Nor is there any regulation of seclusion in other facilities that kids may be held like detention centers or residential treatment facilities. The National Juvenile Defender Center, Lighthouse Youth Services, and Youth on Assignment join the #stopsolitaryOHyouth campaign to seek regulations on the use of isolation in all settings kids may held.
