Hey everyone, sorry for the radio silence, it’s been a busy month here in Corpus. Moving forward, we’ll be sending out updates every week or two.
First off, I want to thank you for signing our petition to protect the Corpus Christi Bay. Our coastal resources depend on good stewardship. We believe part of that process is using good science to inform data driven decision making. Until that happens, we will continue to advocate for your concerns and we will continue to inform you on how you can speak up for our bays.
Top news item: The Port of Corpus Christi Authority (POCCA) has canceled development on their La Quinta desalination plant. Their reasons for abandoning the project were due to the modeling results from their CCBay model. This is great news because it strengthens our case for the importance of using good desal science to make informed decisions.
Second news item: The Port of Corpus Christi has made their far field model for the Corpus Christi Bay available to the public. So far, the modeling results for the City of Corpus Christi’s Inner Harbor plant are troubling. The City believes the modeling isn’t accurate for their Inner Harbor project and we agree, we believe the results would actually be much worse. We’ve noticed a few potential errors in the model inputs that once addressed, would produce less favorable results than what the current modeling is showing.
Sidenote: John and I have met with staff from the POCCA and submitted our suggestions for improvements to the model. We’ll keep you posted if they update it with our recommendations.
Last news item: I will be presenting all of our signatures to City Council this week (09/10/2024) along with a request for an update on the City’s stance on doing a far field model. The last official statement was in June 2024 when they said the City was not planning on doing any further modeling beyond the near field (first 400 feet). I’ll send out an update afterwards.
In the meantime: We created an Instagram account for the petition. It’s @ProtectTheCorpusChristiBay. Be sure to add us and to send us your suggestions on how we can win this.
Cheers,
Jason
