In response to concerns raised by residents, parents, and school officials, Nederland City Council Member and Mayor Pro Tem Jeff Ortiz has formally requested that the city review tobacco and vape retailers across Nederland. This includes evaluating:

• The number of retailers currently operating
• Whether they have proper permits
• Their proximity to schools and youth-centered areas
• Compliance with zoning and occupancy requirements

The city is also exploring potential local policies to better protect students and strengthen enforcement of existing laws.

This kind of response is an important step forward - and it shows that community voices are being heard.
