Thank you to everyone supporting this and have signed and shared. We cannot relax so please keep sharing to have The Services Animals (Offences) Bill law in the UK.
CANINE OFFICERS -
In America, Canada and most countries around the world the Police Dog (in the eyes of the law) are regarded as the same as an officer…..if an assault on K9's offenders go straight to jail for 5-10 years. Harming these four-legged law agents is now a federal offense.
But here in the UK things are slightly different, as there is no specific offence, so what options are open when a police dog is deliberately killed or injured in the line of duty?
The Criminal Damage Act 1971 – Domestic animals can be regarded as property for the purposes of this legislation. Is this really appropriate for a trained defender protecting society and catching criminals?
Section 4 of the Animal Welfare Act 2006 – Makes it offence to cause unnecessary suffering to a protected animal. Not really designed for a police dog doing its duty.
There is this fiction common in law enforcement and consequently in the public that police dogs are “canine officers”, but in the eyes of civil law they are merely domestic animals, which is to say 'property'.
Canine officers need greater protection under UK law because of the dangerous situations they face and because the law needs to recognise that an animal is not like a computer and is a living thing that has to be taken care of. Though the animal’s not a person, the bond [with the human officer] is still there.
Uk Government need to follow the examples of other countries who protect their canine officers. Help us to get there.
