Demand for Transparent and Fair Account Enforcement on Reddit

To: Reddit, Inc., Reddit Executive Leadership, and the Board of Directors

Reddit has become one of the world’s largest platforms for communities, discussion, knowledge sharing, and user-generated content. Millions of people rely on Reddit every day to communicate, exchange information, participate in communities, and build long-term accounts and reputations.

We are asking Reddit to address serious concerns regarding account enforcement, particularly the growing number of users who report receiving account suspensions, permanent bans, or other restrictions that they believe are unclear, disproportionate, automated, or difficult to meaningfully appeal.

According to numerous user reports and community discussions, these concerns have become particularly noticeable since the end of May 2026. Users report losing access to established accounts, communities, karma, posts, comments, and years of participation on Reddit, sometimes without a sufficiently clear explanation of what specific action caused the enforcement.

We recognize and support Reddit’s need to enforce its rules. A safe and functional platform requires moderation, and users who deliberately violate clearly established rules should be subject to appropriate consequences.

However, enforcement must also be predictable, transparent, proportionate, and understandable to ordinary users.

A user should be able to understand:

which specific rule they allegedly violated;
what specific content or behavior resulted in the enforcement action;
whether the decision was made automatically or by a human reviewer;
why the particular penalty was selected;
how the decision can be meaningfully appealed;
and what standards are applied when an appeal is reviewed.
At present, many users feel that the enforcement process does not provide sufficient clarity or confidence that their individual circumstances are being fairly considered.

We are therefore asking Reddit to take the following actions:

1. Increase transparency of account bans and suspensions.

When an account is restricted, Reddit should provide a clear and specific explanation identifying the applicable rule and, where reasonably possible, the content or behavior that triggered the enforcement action.

2. Establish clearer enforcement standards.

Users should be able to understand what types of behavior may result in warnings, temporary restrictions, or permanent bans. Enforcement standards should be written in language that an ordinary user can reasonably understand.

3. Improve transparency around automated enforcement.

When an account is restricted primarily as a result of automated systems, users should be informed that automated detection was involved. Automated enforcement should include appropriate safeguards against false positives and unintended mass enforcement.

4. Strengthen the appeal process.

Every user facing a significant account-level restriction should have access to a meaningful appeal process. Appeals should not merely result in an automated confirmation of the original decision.

5. Provide meaningful human review for serious or disputed account actions.

Permanent bans and other severe account-level sanctions should, where appropriate, be eligible for review by a qualified human reviewer, particularly when a user provides a credible explanation that the enforcement may have been incorrect.

6. Review the increase in reported account restrictions since the end of May 2026.

We ask Reddit to investigate whether there have been changes to automated enforcement systems, detection thresholds, anti-spam systems, account integrity systems, or other moderation mechanisms that may have contributed to an increase in wrongful or disproportionate account restrictions.

7. Publish meaningful transparency information about account enforcement.

Reddit should provide users and the wider community with sufficiently detailed information about the scale and nature of account enforcement, including information that can help determine whether automated systems are producing significant numbers of false positives.

8. Protect legitimate users from losing years of participation because of unclear enforcement.

Long-standing accounts, established communities, posts, comments, karma, and personal contributions represent significant value to users. Permanent loss of such accounts should not occur without a clear, understandable, and proportionate enforcement process.

Our position

This petition is not a demand that Reddit stop enforcing its rules.

We are asking Reddit to make enforcement fairer, clearer, more predictable, and more accountable.

Rules are meaningful only when users can reasonably understand what is expected of them and when enforcement decisions can be challenged through a genuine review process.

Reddit’s own mission emphasizes communities and the people who create them. Those communities cannot function effectively if ordinary users are afraid that their accounts may suddenly disappear without a clear explanation or meaningful opportunity for review.

We therefore respectfully request that Reddit’s executive leadership and Board of Directors formally review these concerns and provide a public response addressing the following questions:

Has Reddit identified any significant change in account enforcement or automated detection systems since the end of May 2026?
Has Reddit observed an increase in account bans, suspensions, locks, or other account-level restrictions during this period?
What safeguards exist to prevent automated systems from incorrectly banning legitimate users?
What proportion of account-level enforcement decisions are reviewed by humans?
What improvements does Reddit plan to make to the transparency and effectiveness of its appeal process?
Will Reddit commit to providing clearer explanations for permanent or significant account restrictions?
We are asking Reddit to listen to its users.

This petition represents a request for transparency, accountability, and a fair enforcement process.

We believe Reddit can protect its communities while also protecting legitimate users from unjustified or unexplained enforcement.

We respectfully ask Reddit, its executive leadership, and its Board of Directors to review this matter and provide a formal response to the Reddit community.
