Protect Palazzina Vincenti, an architectural landmark
The Issue
Designed in 1948 by the visionary architect Gustave R. Vincenti, Palazzina Vincenti stands as a remarkable testament to Modernist architecture in Malta. Not only did Vincenti design this building as his private residence, but he also gifted our nation a landmark that marked a turning point in our architectural history.
There is little that compares to it, so its loss would mean the destruction of something that has no equal. Palazzina Vincenti ’s iconic sweeping curves facing the sea at St Julian's, and prized interior is threatened by a proposed 13-storey hotel that would destroy its distinctive profile, insert large structural columns and demolish its unique, richly decorated reinforced concrete ceiling, compromising its original character and integrity.
We call on the Maltese Authorities, the Planning Authority and the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage to recognise the importance of Palazzina Vincenti by:
• Immediately issuing an Emergency Conservation Order and subsequent grant the entirety of Palazzina Vincenti Grade 1 protection, essential to protect its exceptional architectural and historical significance.
• Extend Grade 2 protection to the internal areas of neighbouring houses designed by Perit Vincenti.
• Acquiring the building in the national interest according to the Public Domain Act, to ensure its long-term preservation for the public.
Malta’s architectural heritage extends beyond its medieval, Baroque and Neoclassical landmarks. Palazzina Vincenti deserves equal consideration for its exceptional architectural value.
Let us ensure this irreplaceable architectural treasure remains part of Malta’s architectural legacy by signing this petition. Please join Flimkien għal Ambjent Aħjar, leading architects, historians and preservationists in urging decision-makers to value our heritage and protect Palazzina Vincenti for future generations.
