Yesterday morning the Nebraska Unicameral voted on LB 77. LB 77 is also known as the constitutional carry bill. This bill makes it so citizens don't have to "navigate burdensome government regulations," according to the NRA. What this bill actually does is make it so there are no regulations on who can conceal carry. Thankfully, Nebraskans are still required to obtain a background check but will no longer need to receive a permit or take a gun safety training class.

Not only are the citizens of Nebraska disappointed in the decision to pass this bill but so is law enforcement. The Lincoln Police Department expressed its disappointment when it stated, “The chief is disappointed in the legislature’s decision because the most important factor in making these decisions should be public safety and the men and women who serve our community.” Not only did Lincoln's police Chief express concern but so did Omaha's police chief. Chief Todd Schmaderer spoke in opposition to the proposal at the hearing.

Without gun registration, we lose our way of preventing the mentally ill, substance users, gang members, and known criminals from purchasing a firearm. To protect the safety of people's lives we need to make an effort to enforce more gun control in Nebraska. The Red Flag laws are a great way of doing this while still keeping our 2nd amendment rights.
