We are just hours away from our protest against the use of Will Rogers parking lot as a hazardous debris sorting facility.
The speed at which this has come together and the overwhelming response have been truly inspiring. Thank you to everyone who has supported this effort so far!
Instructions for Those Attending:
Meeting Location: Parking Lot 8N.
March Route: We will walk along the bike path to Will Rogers parking lot.
Arrive Early if you want to make a sign or poster. Materials will be available.
Social Media is Key: We need all attendees to:
- Post updates
- Stream live
- Take photos and videos
- Share with your friends and followers
This is our opportunity to educate others on the reality of the situation.
What to Expect
Along the way, we will observe and document:
- Storm drain conditions
- The current state of the beach
- The impact of the wildfire on our ecosystem
- Once we arrive at Will Rogers, we will take a group photo.
This is where the real work begins. The "on the ground" protest will transition online. We will expose the truth of what is happening using social media and other tools to spread awareness.
A couple photographers will be taking high-resolution images, which we will email to all attendees for use in social media posts.
Return Walk & Additional Activities:
For those interested, we will walk back to the meet-up location along the shoreline. This will allow us to document firsthand the wildfire’s devastating impact on our coastal ecosystem. Again, this is a prime opportunity to show the world what is going on.
Important Safety Notes:
Footwear: Be mindful of your shoes. We don’t yet know the toxicity levels of the debris until lab results come in.
Protect Yourself: Masks are recommended. Avoid touching any debris or walking directly in the ash and soot.
Clean-Up Protocol: We will have Clorox wipes available to wipe down shoe soles after the walk.
Wildlife & Conservation Awareness
This is also a chance to:
- Meet the famous Santa Monica snowy plovers
- Learn about wildlife surveys and how they are conducted
- See the sand dune restoration project
- Learn about field research such as Santa Monica bottlenose dolphin identification project
Your participation is crucial in making this protest a success. Let's stand together, expose the truth, and fight for our environment! See you there!
