In our beloved neighorhood, a significant threat looms as NineDot Energy proposes the construction of a high-risk Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at 69th Place. This facility, powered by lithium-ion technology, is alarmingly close—only a few steps away—from cherished community institutions and vulnerable locations such as PS/IS 128, PS 49, educational centers like Books n Rattles and Kid's Play World, Juniper Valley Animal Hospital, along with numerous residential homes and small businesses that form the backbone of our community.
The Risks We Cannot Ignore:
1. Fire & Safety Hazards: Lithium-ion batteries, though efficient, pose a severe fire risk. Once ignited, these fires, known as thermal runaway, are extremely difficult to control, requiring special methods to extinguish. The potential release of toxic fumes presents a significant health hazard, especially for children in nearby schools and daycare centers.
2. Environmental Impact: A facility of this nature could harm our local environment, endangering the air quality and affecting our community’s ecological balance. This environmental disruption directly threatens the health of our families, our animals in the Juniper Valley Animal Hospital, and the natural beauty of our surroundings.
3. Impact on Property Values and Lifestyle: The presence of such an industrial facility can significantly lower property values. Local businesses may suffer a decline in foot traffic as the area becomes less desirable due to safety concerns.
