We are organizing a standing demonstration on Saturday, July 26 at 10:00 AM in front of the East Gate of Chichibunomiya Rugby Stadium (on the Ginkgo tree-lined side). Our goal is to urge the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) to reject a forthcoming application to dispose of this important public asset.
This action is in response to the Jingu Gaien redevelopment project, which includes a plan to swap the locations of Chichibunomiya Rugby Stadium and Jingu Baseball Stadium and rebuild both. This would require a transfer of land rights, and the first step is for the Japan Sport Council (JSC)—the current owner of the rugby stadium and one of the developers—to receive government approval to dispose of the property.
However, Chichibunomiya Rugby Stadium is public property, owned by JSC on behalf of the people of Japan. By law, the disposal of such an asset requires approval from the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. Many experts and citizens believe that such approval should not be granted.
To highlight public concern, we will gather in front of the stadium and form a symbolic “scrum” to protect this historic sports venue.
Several lawmakers and academic experts will give speeches to explain the significance of the issue and the risks involved.
We hope many people will join us in raising their voices to protect our shared heritage.
