Protect Ireland’s Breeding Dogs‼️

The Issue

🐾 TOGETHER, WE CAN RAISE THE STANDARD FOR DOG WELFARE IN IRELAND 🇮🇪🐶

Before buying a puppy, please take the time to research where that puppy has come from. Behind attractive advertisements, designer breed names and reassuring words, there can be welfare concerns that prospective owners never see.

We are calling for the removal of large-scale dog breeding establishments from Ireland. There is simply no place in our country for breeding operations on an industrial scale.

It also calls for responsibility and oversight to be removed from individual local county councils and placed in the hands of a single, independent national body, ensuring consistent standards, inspections and enforcement across the country.

We are not calling for the complete removal of responsible dog breeders. There is a place for a small number of genuinely responsible, welfare-focused breeders who prioritise the health and wellbeing of their dogs over profit. However, breeding on a very small scale — perhaps with one or two breeding females — is more than sufficient.

The Government has proposed measures to strengthen dog-breeding welfare standards, including provisions relating to litter numbers, breeding ages and veterinary care. However, many campaigners believe stronger protections are still needed — including a clear legal cap on the number of breeding females that can be kept in a single establishment.

🐾 We are calling for:

🔹 A clear legal cap on the number of breeding females permitted in any single establishment and Independent and unannounced welfare inspections

🔹 Stronger enforcement of existing animal welfare legislation alongside harsher punishment for those found to be responsible for the suffering of any puppy or dog in their care !

🔹 Greater transparency around inspections, licences and compliance

🔹 Stronger protections for breeding dogs

🔹 A review of breeding limits to ensure welfare is prioritised over scale

There must be a limit. Allowing large-scale establishments to keep hundreds of breeding females raises serious questions about whether each individual dog can receive the care, attention and welfare it deserves.

A dog should never be viewed simply as a means of producing puppies.

Dogs deserve care, comfort, proper veterinary attention, socialisation and the opportunity to live a life where their welfare comes before profit. 🐶❤️

Ireland has an opportunity to set a higher standard.
