HUNTERSTON HYPERSCALE DATA CENTRE UPDATE: 2,167 Signatures so far and a Massive Breakthrough at Holyrood!

We have officially hit 2,167 signatures! Thanks to your incredible local campaigning across West Kilbride, Seamill, Fairlie, Largs, and Millport,  the national fight against speculative hyperscale data centres has reached a historic turning point. 

The SNP National Council has officially voted to back a temporary ban (moratorium) on all new large-scale data centre applications across Scotland. This massive policy shift follows intense, coordinated pressure from local campaigns, Action to Protect Rural Scotland, and the Scottish Greens. 

What this means for Hunterston:

North Ayrshire Council recently confirmed that while no formal planning application has been submitted, the developer's Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Scoping Report for Hunterston Hyperscale data centre is under review. 

This project is a monster. It proposes transforming 84 hectares of agricultural land into a massive 500MW industrial complex with buildings up to 35 metres tall. It threatens our coastal landscapes, marine ecosystems, and historic landmarks. The national momentum for a "pause" puts a major roadblock in front of these plans—but we cannot afford to celebrate just yet.

Why we MUST NOT be complacent:

A vote by the SNP National Council is a major political victory, but it is not yet official law. The proposal is currently sitting with government ministers. Meanwhile, developers are already trying to push back behind closed doors. 

If we relax now, speculative applications like the one at the Hunterston castle estate could still be rammed through before legally binding environmental standards are put in place. North Ayrshire Council has stated that any future formal application will require a full assessment of its energy use, water consumption, and landscape impact. We must ensure the Scottish Government forces a full pause before any ground is broken.
