Following a delegation to the Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority on May 14th, 2024, we are proud to share with you all that the CLOCA Board of Directors has endorsed the ‘Conservation Area Rodenticide Policy’ (May 2024), which prohibits the use of rodenticide products on lands and facilities owned by CLOCA except in emergency management situations.
CLOCA is an environmental leader seeking to ensure safe and responsible use of products such as rodenticides to minimize risks to human health, non–target wildlife and the environment. Rodenticides are substances that are used to control populations of pests such as mice and rats. This policy restricts the use of Rodenticide in CLOCA facilities and lands and aims to increase public awareness related to non-target wildlife health. This policy also supports Goal #3 of the CLOCA Strategic Plan 2021-2025, which specifies that “we remain dedicated to the protection, management and safety of Conservation Areas.”
It is the policy of CLOCA to protect wildlife from secondary poisoning through limiting the use of rodenticide products on lands owned by CLOCA and to discourage the use of these products throughout our watershed to minimize risks to human health and non-target wildlife.
We greatly appreciate CLOCA’s commitment to this cause and hope this is the first of many similar announcements!
