VOTE NO ON STATE CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT 2

Florida Constitutional Amendment 2 proposes adding a constitutional right to hunt and fish in Florida and designates hunting and fishing as the preferred method for "responsibly managing and controlling fish and wildlife," preserving this right indefinitely. However, Florida's existing statutes already protect the right to hunt and fish, making this amendment redundant. 

The amendment's ambiguous language is concerning. It fails to define the scope of practices it would protect. This lack of clarity opens the door to inhumane and ecologically harmful methods of "traditional hunting," such as gill nets and steel-jawed traps, which have been previously banned for their cruel and destructive impacts on wildlife and ecosystems.

Additionally, by prioritizing hunting as the preferred means of wildlife management, the amendment undermines science-based conservation and non-lethal methods in managing wildlife populations and wildlife-human conflicts. Effective wildlife management prioritizes non-lethal solutions over killing. The amendment's narrow focus on hunting threatens these well-established, ethical approaches to conservation.

Read the Guardian's latest article on Amendment 2. You may recognize the name Lane Stephens in the article. He is one of the lobbyists who pushed to get HB 87 - Taking of Bears passed. It's no surprise that he is now pushing for Amendment 2, an amendment that makes hunting the preferred method for managing fish and wildlife, sidelining proven non-lethal solutions, like bear-resistant trashcans, and other humane methods used to peacefully coexist with wildlife.
