Dear Honourable Steve Clark,

I am writing to express my deep concern and to request your continued support regarding the ongoing discussions surrounding the Ferguson Forest Centre (FFC) land disposition. Your commitment to the FFC and its significance to Eastern Ontario has been evident, particularly when you welcomed the review of the Ontario Tree Seed Plant closure in 2018. You recognized the negative impact this closure would have on operations at the FFC, including the potential loss of 13 full-time jobs and over $1 million in annual economic activity. Your engagement with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) underscored that the issues facing the FFC were not isolated to North Grenville but were part of a larger provincial concern with potential ripple effects across Eastern Ontario.

Your advocacy was not just about preserving local jobs; it was about safeguarding an institution that contributes significantly to the region’s environmental stewardship. The Ontario Tree Seed Plant’s closure threatened the FFC’s ability to continue its critical work in tree planting and conservation—work that has far-reaching implications for the entire region’s ecological health.

Further demonstrating your commitment, you were instrumental in facilitating a groundbreaking partnership between Canopy Growth, Forests Ontario, and the FFC. This collaboration, which resulted in a $100,000 donation to support tree planting initiatives in the wake of the 50 Million Tree Program’s cancellation, highlighted the FFC’s importance in addressing environmental challenges across Eastern Ontario.

At the cheque presentation ceremony, your comments reinforced the notion that the FFC is a vital asset to the region. You praised Canopy Growth for being exemplary corporate citizens and recognized the economic and environmental boost the partnership provided. By bringing together private industry and non-profit initiatives, you demonstrated how the FFC’s work transcends municipal boundaries and contributes to broader regional and provincial goals.

Beyond its environmental and economic contributions, the Ferguson Forest Centre holds significant cultural heritage value for North Grenville. The FFC spans over 1,000 acres of land, much of which is forested and has been dedicated to conservation, recreation, and education for decades. This expansive area is not just a natural resource but a living testament to the community’s long-standing commitment to preserving its natural heritage. The Centre’s educational sites and recreational areas are deeply intertwined with the cultural identity of North Grenville.

Ontario’s cultural policies recognize the importance of such spaces in preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of communities. The Ontario Heritage Act provides for the conservation of properties that have cultural heritage value or interest. The Act underscores the need to protect significant natural landscapes that contribute to a community’s cultural heritage. The Ferguson Forest Centre, with its vast acreage and deep historical roots, is an embodiment of this policy. It serves as a cultural landmark that reflects the environmental ethos and community spirit of North Grenville.

To maintain its status as a cultural and environmental jewel of Eastern Ontario, it is crucial that the Ferguson Forest Centre’s acreage remains intact. The entirety of the 1,000 acres contributes to the FFC’s role in environmental conservation, community recreation, and cultural heritage. Any reduction in this land through sale or development would not only diminish its environmental capacity but also erode the cultural and historical significance that the land holds for North Grenville and the broader region.
