I am currently reading the book Bringing Nature Home by Doug Tallamy. In the book, he discusses the role of keystone species in an ecosystem. He cites the work of Peter de Ruiter and his colleagues at Utrecht University, who liken ecosystems to the game Jenga, where each block keeps the tower from tumbling down. If you remove one block, the importance of the remaining blocks changes, thus affecting the stability of the tower. This analogy emphasizes the complex and interdependent nature of ecosystems, highlighting the essential role of biodiversity in maintaining their stability and existence.

Tallamy also discusses how the efficiency of an ecosystem depends on the retention of energy before it is lost. A diverse range of energy users, including plants and animals, leads to increased productivity, resulting in the generation of essential services for humans, such as oxygen production, carbon sequestration, water filtration, and timber. Additionally, a diverse ecosystem plays a crucial role in mitigating large-scale weather systems.

In light of this, it is vital to prioritize the protection of endangered and threatened species such as wolves, grizzly bears, beavers, elephants, lions, rhinos, and giraffes. These species are the building blocks of a stable ecosystem and their presence is crucial for supporting the web of life.

If you live in the United States and want to protect endangered and threatened wildlife here and globally, call your federal representative and state you want him/her to support the ProTECT Act; Prohibiting Threatened and Endangered Creature Trophies Act, (H.R. 7840) that prohibits the taking of a trophy of an endangered or threatened species within the United States and ban the import of any such trophy into the United States.
