The Issue

In today's digital age, the privacy and well-being of children are increasingly at risk due to the unauthorized dissemination of misleading information about their situations. As a concerned parent, I have witnessed firsthand the detrimental effects that public misrepresentation can have on a child's emotional and psychological health. This petition is deeply personal to me because I have experienced the pain and distress it causes not only to the children but also to families trying to navigate their rights and responsibilities without the added burden of misinformation.

Currently, there are cases where biased narratives are spread by individuals who lack full understanding or context, leading to reputational damage and emotional distress for affected families. This is particularly rampant on social media platforms, where posts can go viral within minutes, painting an inaccurate picture that is difficult to correct.

To address this urgent issue, we call upon policymakers to implement stronger regulations that potentially further aggravate parental identity rights misrepresentation and using Public Platforms to misrepresent the truth of a child's true parent .

Expressions such as “my kids”, “our children” or “their kids” may appear harmless in isolation. In many families, such language is used affectionately and reflects genuine bonds between children, step-parents, guardians and other caregivers. We do not seek to diminish those relationships or suggest that biological connection alone determines who can provide love, care and support.

However, context matters. Where an individual is neither a biological nor adoptive parent, and their use of parental language serves to displace, erase or diminish the recognised role of a child's parent, such representations warrant careful consideration. This is particularly important in circumstances where parental conflict, coercive behaviour, abuse or parental alienation may already be present.

The public repetition and endorsement of such narratives may contribute to the normalisation of behaviour that marginalises a parent, creates confusion about family relationships or undermines a child's relationship with that parent. Where these representations are used to cultivate a favourable public image, gain recognition or portray oneself as an exemplary caregiver, the potential impact on the child and the other parent should not be overlooked.

This includes the requirement for consent from both parents or legal guardians before any data relating to a minor can be published publicly. Furthermore, we demand that social media platforms take immediate action to revise their policies in order to swiftly address and remove any content found to misrepresent or exploit children.

Additionally, an independent regulatory body should be established to monitor and respond to complaints regarding potential misrepresentations leading to a penalty or fine in the amount of no less than R50 000.00.

Such initiatives will ensure that the rights and responsibilities of parents are respected and that the dignity and privacy of children are protected.

By signing this petition, we can urge lawmakers to prioritize children's rights in the digital landscape and create a safer environment for all families. Let us take a stand to protect our children from the harmful effects of public misrepresentation. Please sign and share this petition to support safeguarding our children's future.
