Thank you to everyone who signed and shared this petition calling on Governor Gavin Newsom to protect transgender people across California. Your voices made a real impact.
Here’s where things stand:
✅ SB 59 — Transgender Privacy Act was signed into law. This means court records for legal name and gender-marker changes will now be automatically sealed, helping protect the privacy and safety of trans and nonbinary people. It takes effect right away, with full implementation by July 1, 2026.
✅ SB 497 — Transgender State of Refuge was signed into law. This bill safeguards sensitive medical information, protecting trans people in California from out-of-state subpoenas and criminalizing unauthorized disclosures of our data.
❌ SB 418 — Health Care Coverage was vetoed. This bill would have guaranteed equal access to medically necessary gender-affirming care, including hormone therapy. Its veto is deeply disappointing and reminds us why our work is not done.
These victories and setbacks show what’s at stake. Trans people in California—and across the country—still face discrimination in healthcare, housing, employment, and education. We need leaders who will stand with us and make sure everyone can live safely and authentically.
✨ What’s next:
We must keep pushing for comprehensive, inclusive policies—especially healthcare protections for trans people and youth. Keep calling, emailing, and meeting with your elected officials. Let them know that trans rights are human rights, and that we’re paying attention.
Thank you for standing with me in this fight for dignity, safety, and equality. Together, we can make California a true home for everyone.
