Protect and Promote LGBTQ+ History in Missouri’s Public Places

Protect and Promote LGBTQ+ History in Missouri’s Public Places
The Issue
Missouri is home to a vibrant and important LGBTQ+ community and history. However, this history is often underserved and overlooked in public spaces and historical narratives throughout our state. Neglecting to acknowledge this significant part of our history does an immense disservice to the LGBTQ+ community and to our state's diverse history. According to the Williams Institute (2019), approximately 4.5% of the population of Missouri identifies as LGBTQ+. However, the representation of LGBTQ+ history in our public spaces does not reflect this reality. This is not just a question of inclusivity but also a matter of historic preservation. Important events in LGBTQ+ history, such as the role of transgender women of color in the St. Louis ball scene or the activism during the HIV epidemic in Missouri, deserve recognition and respect. By including and promoting LGBTQ+ history in our public spaces, we can foster a deeper understanding and respect for these communities and their importance to Missouri’s history. It is essential that this part of our community is not only preserved but celebrated. Let us show our commitment to diversity and representation by calling for a preservation and promotion of LGBTQ+ history in all of Missouri's public spaces. Please sign this petition and take an active stand for historical inclusivity.
