Urgent Call to Action (forward from CAG) regarding the Math Framework:

The California Department of Education is asking the State Board of Education to skip public review and comment of their last draft (to be released this December). They want the State Board of Education to approve their final Framework in May 2022 without public input. We need you to send an email to the State Board of Education now to insist that the public be allowed to review and comment on the changes!

Thanks to your hundreds of public comments and phone calls, the Instructional Quality Commission (IQC) has asked the California Department of Education (CDE) to revise the draft California Mathematics Framework to add guidance on serving diverse gifted and advanced students.

Because of the large volume of changes needed to revise the Framework per the Instructional Quality Commission's instructions, the California Department of Education is asking the State Board of Education (SBE) to delay the next (and last) draft, originally scheduled for June, until December.

The California Department of Education is also asking the State Board of Education not to return to the Instructional Quality Commission with the draft - skipping an important opportunity for the public to review and comment - before the State Board of Education approves the final Framework in May 2022.

Given the extensive changes, and the controversy already surrounding the Math Framework and its recommendations - we are concerned that there is no opportunity for the Instructional Quality Commission to review these changes before the State Board of Education votes to approve the Framework in March 2022.

Due to the extensive revisions that this new document has been promised to include, join California Association for the Gifted in advocating for the document to be read as a DRAFT document. Email the State Board of Education TODAY at: sbe@cde.ca.gov and ask for a time to read, think, and respond to the proposed changes in 6 months. Ask for a complete review and discussion of the Math Framework draft by the Instructional Quality Commission.

Sample Email language might include:
Dear Members of the State Board of Education:

I am an educator/family member who cares about math education in California schools.

Given the extensive public interest and comment around the California Math Framework's first draft this spring, it is essential that the IQC thoroughly review and revise the next draft of the Math Framework.
In addition, with the substantial changes prompting the CDE to ask for an extra 6 months to complete the rewrite, it is critical that California families, teachers, and community members also be given 60 days to review and submit feedback on this next draft.
I ask you to:
    (i) Give the public a full 60 day review and comment period in Fall 2021 or Winter 2022, and
(ii) Direct the CDE to schedule a public IQC meeting where IQC members will review the revised draft and public comments, and make its recommendations for the SBE to approve at its May 2022 meeting.

Sincerely,
Thank you for your continued support of California's diverse gifted, talented, and advanced students!
