The Issue

Growing up in a digital age, I've witnessed the profound impact that social media has on young people, especially those in senior high school. While platforms like Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, and Messenger provide incredible opportunities for connection, learning, and entertainment, the potential downsides cannot be overlooked. As someone concerned about the wellbeing of our youth, I feel compelled to address these issues head-on.

Social media usage among high school students has become ubiquitous. According to a 2022 Pew Research study, over 95% of teens report owning or having access to a smartphone, with nearly 85% of them frequenting social media platforms multiple times daily. This connectivity, while beneficial in many respects, has also led to significant challenges. Instances of cyberbullying are on the rise, with a survey from the Cyberbullying Research Center indicating that over a third of teens have experienced online harassment. Moreover, the paradox of social media is that it can spread false news just as effectively as genuine information, leading to misinformation and, quite often, distress.

There are also concerns regarding online scams tailored to exploit this digital-savvy yet sometimes inexperienced demographic, potentially resulting in financial loss and emotional turmoil. Privacy is another looming concern, as many young users may not fully understand the implications of sharing personal information online. Finally, there is the issue of screen time. Excessive usage of social media is linked to sleep deprivation, anxiety, and other health concerns, as revealed by a comprehensive study from the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health.

We are urging school administrators in Lourdes College to implement programs that teach students responsible and safe social media usage. These programs should educate students about the dangers of cyberbullying, misinformation, and online scams while promoting a balanced approach to screen time. Schools could partner with tech companies for workshops, host webinars with experts on social media etiquette, and create a platform for students to share their experiences and solutions.
