Across centuries and continents, humanity has proven a simple truth: lasting peace is possible — when we build systems that make war unthinkable.
These are called peace systems — networks of societies that replace rivalry with cooperation, link their well-being, and create institutions that reward harmony instead of aggression. They show us that peace isn’t just the absence of war, but the presence of structure, trust, and shared purpose.
As peace scientist Dr. Judith Hand reminds us:
“Peace is not a dream. It is a system waiting to be built.”
How Peace Systems Have Worked
Throughout history, people have succeeded in keeping peace by choosing connection over conflict:
• The Iroquois Confederacy (North America) — Six nations governed by a Great Law of Peace that resolved disputes through councils and consensus for centuries.
• Upper Xingu River Basin Tribes (Brazil) — Fifteen tribes replacing warfare with ritual cooperation, trade, and shared festivals for over 500 years.
• The Swiss Confederation (Europe) — A federation that turned rival cantons into one of the world’s most stable democracies.
• The Nordic Nations — Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Iceland have not fought each other for over two centuries.
• The European Union — 27 nations linked through law and trade, making war “not merely unthinkable, but materially impossible.”
• ASEAN and CARICOM — Regional systems in Asia and the Caribbean that maintain peace through dialogue, consensus, and cooperation.
Our brief 17-minute video, “Ending War is Possible. Here’s Why and How” illustrates these peace system examples and much more about how such peace between societies or nations is established and maintained: https://www.afww.org/project-enduring-peace.html.
From ancient confederacies to global institutions, these systems share the same DNA:
Shared Identity — seeing others as part of “us.”
Interdependence — cooperation that makes conflict self-defeating.
Institutions for Dialogue — laws, councils, and treaties that uphold fairness and trust.
Our Mission: A Global Peace System
At Project Enduring Peace, we’re taking these lessons forward.
Our goal is to build momentum for a binding international treaty to end war between nations — an enforceable framework for the world’s first truly global peace system.
Every signature on our petition adds to a growing global voice calling for world leaders to choose cooperation over conflict and reach agreement — just as others have done successfully before.
Together, we can create a world where peace between nations is not temporary, but enduring.
You’ve signed the petition. We urge you now to spread the peace system vision and share the petition and our peace system video with as many other fellow global citizens as you can.
For all children. For all time. No more war!
