The Issue

Makoko, a vibrant, historical community in Lagos dating back to the 19th century, faces ongoing threats from demolition plans by the state government. To many, it’s seen as merely a slum, but for thousands, it’s a home, a livelihood, a community rich in culture and resilience. The plans to bulldoze and fill the land with sand aim to create another developed neighbourhood, yet this cycle damages the communal heritage and results in another environmentally vulnerable area doomed to sink again.
Instead of demolition, we must focus on renovation, a sustainable redevelopment approach that preserves the community's characteristics while enhancing the living conditions for its residents. Makoko has been standing strong through history, providing us a unique floating panorama. It serves as a testament to human resilience and ingenuity under challenging environments.
Makoko could thrive if given the opportunity and investment. With proper infrastructure like clean water, sanitation, and managed waste disposal, coupled with preserving the cultural and environmental uniqueness of the floating village, the community could become a model of sustainable urban living. Renovation would not only uplift the lives of the residents but also save the state resources in continuous, and often failed, redevelopment projects.
Moreover, Makoko's transformation into a clean and habitable environment would support Lagos in meeting international urban sustainability standards, preserving its rich cultural heritage while accommodating modern growth. This effort could draw responsible tourism and innovative urban projects.
We urge the Lagos State Government to redirect their efforts from clearing to cleaning. Let’s invest in proper infrastructure for Makoko, recognizing its value not as a prime real estate location, but as a community integral to the fabric of Lagos. By pursuing a renovation plan, we can empower residents, preserve unique cultural identities, and set an example of environmental resilience.
Join us in demanding a rethink of policies towards Makoko. Let's advocate for policies that protect and preserve, not destroy. Sign this petition to contribute to this effort to ensure Makoko is cleaned, preserved, and developed sustainably, keeping its heartbeat alive for future generations.
