Prohibit foreigners from operating churches in South Africa

The Issue

In recent years, the rapid proliferation of churches operated by foreigners and illegal immigrants in South Africa has raised significant concerns among citizens. These churches, often unregulated, can sometimes become platforms for exploitation and abuse, eroding the social and cultural fabric of our communities. Many South Africans feel that the current situation undermines local religious institutions and disrupts community cohesion.

There have been reports of exploitation, wherein vulnerable individuals are manipulated into giving away their hard-earned money in exchange for false promises and miracles. Such practices not only harm individuals and families but also taint the genuine efforts of legitimate religious leaders who are working tirelessly to uplift their communities. According to reports from community watchdogs, the number of such churches has increased by an alarming rate in the past decade, and their financial activities often escape the scrutiny of tax and regulatory authorities.

Moreover, many of these foreign run churches operate without proper documentation, leading to legal complications and contributing to the challenges faced by the South African immigration system. By allowing unvetted foreigners and illegal immigrants to run these establishments, we are inadvertently fostering an environment where the law can be easily circumvented, further exacerbating the issues of illegal immigration and tax evasion.

We, the undersigned, call upon the Government of South Africa, the Department of Home Affairs, and the Ministry of Justice to take immediate action. There is a pressing need for legislation that specifically prohibits foreigners and illegal immigrants from operating churches within our borders. This measure would ensure that all religious activities are conducted within the framework of South African law, protecting citizens from possible exploitation and abuse.

We urge the Department of Home Affairs, Immigration Authorities, and the Ministry of Justice to develop and enforce a clear set of guidelines and criteria for the establishment of churches. These should include stringent checks on the backgrounds of those seeking to open churches, ensuring that only individuals with genuine intentions are permitted to lead spiritual communities.  We hold the Department of Home Affairs, Immigration Authorities, and the Ministry of Justice fully accountable. If they fail to implement these changes, we will hold them responsible for any further exploitation and abuse.

We demand that all churches be operated solely by South Africans, ensuring that these spaces are no longer exploited by foreign individuals or illegal immigrants. Instead, we urge the government to close these churches run foreign individuals or illegal immigrants and repurpose these church spaces into educational centers, where South Africans can acquire skills such as phone repair, sewing, and other vocational training so we can empower ourselves economically.

This petition represents a collective call to action for the safeguarding of our community's ethical and moral standards. By supporting this cause, you are not only aiding in the protection of local religious landscapes but also standing against any form of exploitation and deceit that seeks to undermine the trust and faith of South African citizens. Please join us in demanding change and sign this petition today.
