Science has confirmed that crustaceans feel pain. But they’re just so tasty, aren’t they!? Is it worth exchanging the agony of a living being for a few minutes of human pleasure?

A 2016 document from the European Observatory of the Market of Fishing and Aquaculture Products (Eumofa) showed that citizens of the European Community consumed 1.93kg of crustaceans per capita in 2014, and Spain is the second country which spends most on fished products, after Italy.

In Spain, as in many other countries, it is common to transport and to keep live crustaceans on ice and to then brutally boil them to death. These practices are extremely cruel and we convince ourselves that these living beings do not suffer because they look so different to us.

Some people insist that crustaceans do not suffer because they are unintelligent beings, due to their small number of neurons compared to that of other sea animals such as the octopus. A lower level of intelligence (which isn’t even determined by the number of neurons), does not hamper the ability to feel pain and suffering.

On top of this, as marine ecologist Lydia Chaparro Elías states: “What matters in these cases is to apply a scientific criteria as well as the principal of caution: if in doubt, the best thing is to minimise suffering of animals as much as possible”.

You only have to hear the lobsters screaming and see them desperately clawing at the sides of the pan as they try to escape the horror of being burnt to death. They can take up to three minutes to die, whilst feeling an incomparable amount of pain and stress every second. They only want to live. All us living beings want to live.

The Italian justice system recognises that lobsters kept alive on ice in restaurants, feel pain, and that this is worsened by tying their pincers together. The Italian Supreme Tribunal points out that “it cannot be considered socially acceptable to have this species at such rigid temperatures which causes them assured suffering, when there are other systems (though more costly), that preserve them in a more respectful way”. After hours or days exposed to these freezing conditions, many die, also because they struggle to breathe and can’t feed. This form of animal abuse has led to the fining of 5,000 euros to an Italian restaurant. An example to follow for Spain.

Switzerland is the only country that has banned the live cooking of crustaceans and requires instead, death by shock. PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) has praised this law: “This legislation makes sense for any person in a civilised society, because when they are submerged in boiling water you can see how the crustaceans twist and turn and claw at the pan to escape”. Despite this, they assure that the best option is to eliminate them from our plates all together, and opt instead for the wide range of vegan options available.

From the moment it is captured from its natural habitat, then transported and frozen, until it is boiled in water and forced to die slowly and painfully, a crustacean goes through a living hell. We do not need to eat these animals. However, there are people that will continue to consume them. If these animals must die though, we owe them a minimum of compassion in their final stages of life by making them the least painful and stressful as possible.
