Dear Supporter,

I'm writing to update you on the case of Dr. Sang Hea Kil, a tenured professor at San Jose State University (SJSU) who has been suspended with pay for the last year due to her support for student protestors challenging the genocide in Palestine.

This summer, SJSU invoked Article 19 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the California State University and the California Faculty Association, with intent to fire Dr. Kil. However, SJSU has reinstated Jonathan Roth, the professor who assaulted a Palestinian protester in front of Sang Kil in February 2024, and he is back on the fall schedule to teach.

Sang Kil, while under attack by SJSU, has stepped up and defended other targeted faculty who were attacked for speech in their public hearing. Sang successfully defended Shanae Martinez at Cal Poly SLO reducing her 8 month no pay penalty to 1 month for supporting their students right to protest a genocide.

Shanae has launched a GoFundMe to help support Sang Kil’s labor in Shanae’s defense since her union, the CFA, declined to compensate Sang for her skillful and valuable defense work.

Please donate and share as Sang Kil needs funding support as she was cut off from summer and winter teaching because of her job suspension that she relies on to survive in the bay area.  Any amount is helpful!

Dr. Sang Kil plans to fight her firing with a public hearing.  We will keep you posted and encourage you to attend and support the battle for free speech, academic freedom, and the tenure system!
