This is our first posting in 5 months. Let me explain why we have been quiet until now.

The fishermen have been protesting against the Penang South Reclamation since 2015. We had virtually exhausted all avenues of protest against the Penang South Reclamation project. In 2019, hundreds of fishermen and activists marched to Parliament. In 2021 Haji Zakaria won his first appeal against the approval of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). But the project EIA was resubmitted and approved in April 2023. Even though the Malaysian Prime Minister promised to scale the 3 islands down to 1, the environmental impact would still be devastating to the fishermen's livelihoods particularly due to the location and scale of the 1 large island.

We could only watch helplessly when reclamation works started in early September 2023. The Chief Minister even announced that they went ahead with the reclamation because there was "no injunction". The powers that be did not even wait for the appeal of Haji Zakaria Ismail, the chief of the Sungai Batu fishermen's unit, to be heard by the Board of Appeals.

Today, we could finally announce that legal action has been filed.
