Congratulations our new Prime Minister of Malaysia Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim who was appointed after the recent 15th General Elections. We appeal to Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim to support the fishermen of Penang and to outright cancel the Penang South Reclamation.

We now look eagerly to Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim to carry out the promises contained in his party manifesto PAKATAN HARAPAN ACTION PLAN, by cancelling the Penang South Reclamation plan.

Section 02 Ensuring Food Security, acknowledges the importance of protecting farmers and fishermen welfare: 
Malaysia has faced multiple serious food crises arising from limited production or natural disasters such as floods. The lack of food supply not only contributes to the increase in prices but also leads to nutritional problems. Food security is not limited to the sufficient production of food supplies. It also involves the welfare of individual players such as farmers and fishermen. What HARAPAN offers are policies that focus on these two aspects to help Malaysians on both sides of the issue.

Section 23 Environmental Protection acknowledges that: 
HARAPAN has outlined several key issues involving climate emergency, finding the best formula as a plan for climate resilience and flood mitigation, pushing the nation towards net-zero carbon emissions while also emphasising the economic and welfare aspect of the rakyat.

According to official estimates, Penang South Reclamation will incur 3.2 million tonnes of carbon annually and thus the implementation of the megaproject will clearly undermine Pakatan Harapan's commitment to the Climate Change Act. The proximity of the proposed 3 man-made islands to environmentally sensitve areas of marine biodiversity will further undermine the proposed designation of Marine Protection Areas near the islands of Pulau Kendi, Pulau Rimau and the Pulau Gazumbo seagrass bed.

Climate Change Act
Tabling the Climate Change Act which will set targets for carbon emissions and forest coverage by 2040. 

Marine Protection Areas
Increasing the percentage of Marine Protection Areas to 30% by 2030 to legally protect valuable areas from being exploited.

In the critical year ahead, Malaysia cannot risk its food security being jeopardised by the PSR project. Sandmining in Perak and the coatal reclamation in Penang can potentially affect hundreds or thousands of square kilometers of fisheries areas and aquaculture areas producing the bulk of northern Peninsular Malaysia's domestic fish supplies, especially those near the urban markets. 

Furthermore, the justification of the Penang State Government that the Penang South Reclamation is needed to finance the Penang Transport Master Plan, is further invalidated by present circumstances. Let us solve Penang's traffic problems through smart, agile solutions and without environmentally destructive megaprojects.

We appeal to the Prime Minister to do everything in his power to uphold the stand taken by the Prime Minister's daughter Nurul Izzah, former Member of Parliment, Permatang Pauh, Penang, who has pledged to continue fighting for the fisherfolk and to ask the Penang State Government to drop the coastal reclamation project.

Pakatan Harapan's promise of pursuing a sustainable and human economy means that the fisherfolks' welfare, food security and environmental protection cannot be traded off for a speculative real estate reclamation megaproject.
