End Aadhar and UIDAI, protect the rights of citizens

The Issue

Aadhar was originally created as a means to make public distribution system more efficient and stop corrupt middle men from pilfering subsidized food and fuel away from the intended recipients.

Instead, the government has reneged on its promise of not making aadhar compulsory, and only for the purpose of receiving subsidies, to pushing aadhar everywhere from income tax to mobile services. This is spitting on the public's trust and backstabbing vulnerable citizens most of whom aren't well versed with cyber security.

Instead, aadhar has caused hardship to some citizens because their biometric data didn't match the entry. Aadhar system had denied several hundreds of senior citizens and daily wage workers whose fingerprints have worn off due to hard labour and age. Isn't this contrary to the very objective of aadhar of providing subsidies to the most hard-done by?

Data security is the other main flaw in aadhar. Already we have have multiple breaches in UIDAI and its associates/contractors, lakhs of records made public and even thousands of fingerprints, which Nandan Nilekani and other officials who work with UIDAI, arrogantly claiming that aadhar data is secure, when it is far from secure. Some hackers have even breached the fingerprint databased and presumably copied fingerprint data, and created fake aadhar accounts by the thousands.

Our personal information like mobile numbers, date of birth, past and current employer, etc is already leaked by companies from cellular service providers to banks and finance corporations. It's wise to assume that they also have possession of our PAN. Further, investigative agencies such as the FBI have acknowledged that finger prints -or their identification accuracy- are not only not as unique as earlier thought, they're easy enough to fake.

Moreover, the data - your personal information, is going to several organizations that are not Indian, including private and foreign government cyber assets. Read more here : https://series.fountainink.in/aadhaar-in-the-hand-of-spies/

Already Google, Facebook and such companies have a lot of your information, information that can personally identify you - your photos, your mobile numbers, your birthdays and relatives' names - so far, they use it to target specific content (ads, search results) that maximize their chances of getting money out of you via some purchase. If you think that's bad enough, soon your fingerprints, iris scans, bank account numbers will be - sorry - are, in that list. As if our domestic banking and call centre agents weren't leaking our confidential information enough.

Several people I work with have received aadhar cards with incorrect data. Wrong names, wrong addresses. This organization UIDAI (or its authorized partners) cannot even get data entry correct - how qualified or competent do you expect they are at cyber security?

While banks still aren't breached because online banking authentication is done by PIN/OTP and/or password, once these are discarded in favour of biometric authentication, all hell could potentially break loose. Remember, we can change our PIN and passwords, but we can't change our biometric signature. Once someone has your biometric data, they can impersonate you and commit all sorts of fraudulent activities gaining access to your bank accounts, mobile service accounts and what not. Not just criminals, but even government can spy on citizens using aadhar , once aadhar becomes the primary key to conduct any transaction. This is not about protection national security, this is about creating a master key which can open anyone's life and lifeline (bank accounts, mobile connections) and render it open to attack, robbery and blackmail. Imagine, if you file an RTI and next day your bank accounts are frozen, mobile service suspended, because the RTI you filed annoyed someone in the government office. The NDA government has already diluted the RTI act making it nullable (closed without providing the asked for information) upon death of the filer, or revocable by filer which is easily achieved by threats of harm to self or family. Now putting in more nails in the coffin of democracy, aadhar gives government more means to silence dissident citizens who do not comply in silence, a huge blow to democracy.

Be an active citizen - oppose aadhar.  Demand an end to the aadhar project and destruction of all its data.
