Dear friends, It was an enormous relief to read in The Guardian early today that “Dee” would be flown to Australia where her and her baby will have access to great medical and technological support for her labour. But our relief for Dee is tempered by frustration, dismay and anger at the ongoing situation for nearly two thousand women, children and men who continue to be warehoused on Nauru and Manus Island. While the global community is reeling from the first two destructive weeks of Trump’s Presidency, it was a shameful moment when Scott Morrison applauded President Trump for catching up with Australia and Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull, remained firm in his uncritical support of Trump’s extreme behaviour in relation to refuges and migration. Join us: www.awswn.org Our friends on Nauru and Manus island are confronting a period of unbelievable insecurity and turbulence as the world waits to see what Trump with honour and what he will won’t. We want all our friends to know that we are holding them in our hearts and minds and we will not stop demanding they come to Australia and find safety and security among us. They are being held in this cruel situation because this policy has the bipartisan support of both Labor and the Coalition. And it's sadly ironic that Trump has been able to leverage this cruel policy to inflict humiliation on Prime Minister Turnbull at the first opportunity. As we've been saying all along, the solution for Mr Turnbull is the same solution as that for refugees and asylum seekers; declare an amnesty and bring everyone to Australia to be processed and cared for in the same way previous governments have managed to do - adequately and with compassion. This would this be a hugely restorative step for Australia and get Mr Turnbull out from under President Trump’s boot. As always, we will keep you updated on the situation as it develops. For the women and children on Nauru, Julie Macken P.S. don't forget to join us at www.awswn.org
