When we began our petition we wished to highlight that Australians could not sit back and abide the violence against women and children on Nauru when so many Australian women knew first hand what it was like to live in fear of violence. Tonight the ABC will be premiering award-winning journalist Sarah Ferguson's programme - Hitting Home. In a year dominated by headline stories of domestic violence, Ferguson has spent the last six months on the frontline, reporting first-hand on the devastating affects of domestic and family violence. Her reportage could not be more timely as tomorrow marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. In advance of this, The Women's Electoral Lobby have begun a Change.org petition calling on Malcolm Turnbull to return funding to frontline women's services. https://www.change.org/p/prime-minister-turnbull-women-s-refuges-save-lives-funding-needed-now This is a cause which I could not agree with more: front line services, refuges and safe housing save lives. I believe that people make the best choices for themselves and their families when they have choices, and without giving women safe options, often they will have nowhere to escape to. Please sign the petition to help restore funding back to frontline services - you will be helping Australian women experiencing violence.
