Senator Lazarus: Cashless welfare card a priority for Australia

Kerry Arch
Wyndham Vale, VIC, Australia

Oct 12, 2015 — @Senator Glenn Lazarus can you please explain how you can support this Healthy Welfare Card policy when the basic card trials have shown to have had very little, if any changes in people's spending habits on healthier living?

Can you please explain how you're supporting so strongly a policy you're showing you're not so knowledgeable on?

This is a huge concern!

Are you sure you're not prejudiced against poor people and welfare recipients?

Today Senator Lazarus has stated in his press release he'll strongly support the Healthy Welfare Card, however, in reading the replies to comments people have left on his Facebook press release, it appears Mr Lazarus doesn't have too much knowledge at all when it comes to the Healthy Welfare Card policy.

He lacks answers on who the policy will target (which range of welfare payments), the costs associated with the card, where you can spend your welfare payment or lack of.

He has no answers on how you can spend the debit card when purchasing second hand goods on buy swap and sell sites, to landlords who only accept cash, children's tuckshops, fetes and farmers markets and bakeries etc who do not use Eftpos facilities.

Senator Lazarus is also making the assumption that those on welfare all gamble, drink, take drugs and don’t care for their children.

There are many underlying issues why people do these things and they are not just welfare recipients that do so.

Shouldn’t more supports be put in place to help those affected by these problems in life?

Cutting payments and access to money will not solve these problems, but exacerbate them.

Please contact Senator Lazarus and educate him on the ill affects this card will have on Australian citizens.
