The Issue

The proposed closure of the Premier Foods (Fruit Products Western Cape) Plant in Tulbagh is a significant concern to our communities of Tulbagh, Saron, Gouda, Ceres, and Wolseley in the Western Cape. This decision, if enacted, could bring devastating socio-economic impacts, not only affecting the hundreds of employees directly linked to the plant but also impacting thousands of others who rely on the plant indirectly through supply and distribution chains as well as local small businesses that thrive thanks to the plant's operation.

For decades, the Premier Foods plant in Tulbagh has been a cornerstone of our local economy, providing stable jobs and supporting growth in our area. It contributes significantly to the region's GDP and has been a symbol of industrial pride for our community. The closure threatens approximately 400 jobs directly associated with this facility. This is particularly alarming in a region where employment opportunities are already scarce, and such a large-scale layoff would exacerbate high unemployment rates, pushing many families into financial hardship and further burdening local support services.

The broader community impact cannot be underestimated. Many local businesses depend on this plant. The closure could lead to a trickle-down effect resulting in reduced business for local suppliers, increased unemployment elsewhere, and a potential decline in quality of life for our residents. Is this what we envision for our community?

We call upon President Cyril Ramaphosa, the Board and Executive Management of Premier Foods Group Limited, the Competition Commission and Tribunal of South Africa, as well as the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation, and Arbitration (CCMA) to intervene. We urge these authorities and stakeholders to explore all possible avenues, including restructuring, governmental support, or potential buyer arrangements, that will keep the Tulbagh plant operational.

Closing this plant should not be taken lightly. It is more than a facility; it is the lifeline of our community. We believe in the resilience and capability of Premier Foods; let's find creative solutions that will uphold the rights and livelihoods of the people of the Western Cape.
