Prevent funding cuts to Dumfries and Galloway Citizens Advice Bureau #LifeLineServices
The Issue
The Dumfries and Galloway Council has announced a proposed budget for 2026/27 which ends the funding in its entirety for the Dumfries and Galloway Citizens Advice Service. Which would bring an end to our service to the community.
Dumfries and Galloway's Citizens Advice Service offers an essential free, confidential, and impartial advice service to everyone in the community. Operating from its three bureaux located in Annan, Dumfries, and Stranraer, the service is a lifeline for some of the most vulnerable members of our society. By assisting with financial issues, helping reduce debt, and preventing homelessness, our Citizens Advice Service is pivotal in transforming lives. We also provide food bank and energy vouchers, improve employability, and offer peace of mind to those in dire need of guidance.
In times of financial strain, our Citizens Advice Service has become even more critical in supporting those struggling to make ends meet. Academic research has shown that Citizens Advice Bureaux provide a substantial return on investment to their communities, at a ratio of 1:50, ie for every £1 invested the return on investment to society is £50. This indicates a vast social and economic benefit for every pound invested in these services. Despite this clear value, the Dumfries and Galloway Council is proposing severe budget cuts in its 2026/27 Budget Consultation, which threaten our ability to continue these vital services.
Losing this funding means losing the ability to support those who rely on us during their most challenging times. If the proposed cuts go through, the community, especially the vulnerable, will find themselves without this critical support. Who will stand with them if we're unable to?
Preserving the funding of the Dumfries and Galloway Citizens Advice Service is not only a sound economic decision but a moral obligation to support our community members who need it the most. Join us in urging the council to reconsider these damaging cuts.
