Over the past few weeks, several institutions have spoken out in favor of Patrick Zaki's freedom. More than ever, we need to DEMAND that the ITALIAN GOVERNMENT recall the Italian Ambassador for consultations and declare Al-Sisi's Egypt, which has been violating human rights for years, a non-safe country.

The Egyptian security forces that kidnapped Zaki belong to the same force (the NS) that was already involved in the kidnapping and murder of Italian researcher Giulio Regeni in 2016.

On 22 February, Patrick's pre-trial detention was extended by 15 days for the second time. After that, on Monday 24th, Patrick was transferred from Talkha police station to the public prison in Mansoura. Visits by lawyers and family were denied until 5 March, so no one can assure his well-being at the moment.

We fear that the Egyptian Government is taking advantage of the current situation in Italy, where coronavirus has been the main topic of interest in the news for days, to punish Patrick and deprive him of his rights, such as family visits and legal support.

We, therefore, demand that the Italian Government take concrete positions and measures; it is not acceptable to continue to maintain economic and diplomatic relations with a country like Al-Sisi's Egypt, which has been violating human rights for years. Words are not enough.
