Hello! Thank you for taking a stand to speak for the animals of Indonesia by signing and sharing this petition. You are true heroes and we are over 1M strong. You do not need a degree in wildlife conservation biology, environmental management or be a NGO to know that an animal is suffering. You only need to look at their living conditions…the pacing…the swaying…the begging to know that what these poor animals are being subjected to daily, is inhumane and cruel. Excuses made by zoos to justify keeping animals in captivity vary from, “helping children learn to love and connect with animals” to “conservation of endangered species”. Yet almost every child you meet is fascinated by and loves the dinosaurs that went extinct approximately 65M years ago and, I could argue that keeping animals in captivity corrupts young minds. Why is it that we have to see animals suffer in zoos in order to save their habitats? We should be saving them in their habitats, regardless! Isn't keeping the animals away from their habitat is in itself cruel? As per my previous updates, in what appears to be an attempt to re-brand itself and with help from their exclusive NGO partner Cee4Life/Sybelle Foxcroft, Bandung Zoo is now calling itself a “wildlife sanctuary” but wildlife sanctuaries do not breed their animals. If Bandung Zoo genuinely wants to be a wildlife sanctuary, they need to take the first step and STOP BREEDING THE ANIMALS and stop using the word “Conservation” as an excuse to sentence the poor animals into a life of captive misery and exploitation. Bandung Zoo/CEE4Life claim to want to provide the animal they hold in captivity with the “5 Freedoms”. While it sounds impressive, Bandung Zoo /Cee4Life have a long way to go. The various upgrades that they have done thus far appear to be nothing more than general maintenance and enclosure clean up. It is the very least they must do for the animals they claim they love, hold captive and profit from! The zoo is a hellhole for the animals. Here is a place to start: 1) Freedom from Hunger and Thirst – WHILST THE ANIMAL MAY NOT BE THIRSTY, HAVE YOU SEEN THEIR FILTHY WATER SOURCE? [ if it wasn't for the update/picture of the filthy pool the lion drank from and your pressure by signing and sharing this petition, the Bandung Zoo would not have cleaned up the lions' pool and enclosure. Yet it never cease to amaze me that Sybelle told her followers that I lied in that update ] VISITORS CONTINUE TO SAY THAT THE ANIMALS LOOK MALNOURISHED. 2) Freedom from Discomfort – HOW IS KEEPING THE ANIMALS IN SMALL FILTHY ENCLOSURES, KEEPING THE ELEPHANTS SELMA AND IRA IN CHAINS, DISPLAYING THE TWO TIGER CUBS MAHARANI AND ESHAN IN A SMALL CAGE WITH NO SUBSTRATE OR WATER and FORCING THE ANIMALS TO DRINK FROM FILTHY WATER SOURCE THEY PEE AND POOP INTO, COMFORT? 3) Freedom from Pain, Injury or Disease – THE ZOO'S LACK OF SUPERVISION HAS LED TO VISITORS THROWING JUNK FOOD AND CIGARETTES TO THE ANIMALS. HOW LONG DID IT TAKE FOR THE ZOO TO TREAT THEIR EMACIATED CAMEL, RAMADAN? AFTER I POSTED A PICTURE OF HIM IN ONE OF MY UPDATES, CEE4LIFE SAID HE HAD A TUMOR REMOVED, THE CAUSE OF HIS ILLNESS (IF YOU BELIEVE THEM) AND HE IS MIRACULOUSLY WELL AGAIN. HOW DID THE WATER BUFFALO I POSTED IN MY PREVIOUS UPDATE BECAME SO EMACIATED? THE RESPONSE SYBELLE/CEE4LIFE CAME UP WITH WAS..."We really dont know where this buffalo is from. Its a very old photo by the looks of it, but those types of bars with the fencing isnt in Bandung. There's a possibility that it was there, but would have to be many years ago. No one knows about the buffalo"..."We at Cee4life can tell you that while we have been at the zoo, we've never seen this animal. However just to be certain that for some unknown reason we may have missed this very large animal after being there for the last year..... we have double checked with the Veterinarians and can confirm that nobody knows about this animal or where it comes from. But it is certainly not in Bandung Zoo and no one recognises this animal or where it is from. We cant even confirm this is Bandung Zoo as the enclosure its in looks nothing like what is there for the bovine animals"... [ FOR SYBELLE'S INFORMATION, THE WATER BUFFALO WAS FROM BANDUNG ZOO AND THE “FENCING” STILL REMAIN IN THE ZOO. AS FOR NO ONE RECOGNIZING THE POOR WATER BUFFALO...HEY, THE LIVES OF THE ANIMALS ARE CHEAP FOR THEM, IF ONE DIES ANOTHER WILL TAKE ITS PLACE AND SUFFER. HARDLY SURPRISING TO HEAR SYBELLE SAY THAT NO ONE KNOWS ABOUT THE WATER BUFFALO. PERHAPS THAT WAS WHY IT BECAME SO EMACIATED AS IT WAS NEGLECTED? IS SYBELLE SO NAIVE TO THINK THAT THE WATER BUFFALO COULD STILL BE ALIVE? LET ME REITERATE FOR SYBELLE AGAIN, … I NEVER SAID THE PICTURE OF THE WATER BUFFALO WAS RECENT. I SAID IT WAS TAKEN IN 2014 AND WAS USED TO POINT OUT THAT EMACIATED ANIMALS GO AS FAR BACK AS 2O14 SINCE SYBELLE SAID THAT “THERE HAS NEVER BEEN ANY STARVING ANIMALS IN THE BANDUNG ZOO. PERHAPS IF SYBELLE REFRAINS FROM TELLING HALF TRUTHS, I WON'T BE COMPELLED TO HAVE TO SET HER RECORD STRAIGHT. 4) Freedom to Express Normal Behaviour – HOW IS KEEPING ELEPHANTS SELMA and IRA CHAINED IN THEIR PEN AND CHAINED WHILST THEY WAIT TO GIVE RIDES ALLOWING FOR THE FREEDOM TO EXPRESS NORMAL BEHAVIOR? 5) Freedom from Fear and Distress – BY KEEPING THE ANIMALS IN CAPTIVITY, UNDUE STRESS IS FORCED UPON THE ANIMALS AND THE ZOO CONTINUE TO PERPETUATE THE CYCLE OF MISERY BY BREEDING MORE ANIMALS AS CUTE BABIES BRING IN VISITORS AND BOOST PROFITS FOR THE ZOO OWNERS! The stereotypical behavior exhibited by the tigers, elephants, camels and the sun bears is indicative that the animals are in distress and driven to madness from forced confinement in unnatural habitats! Whilst Bandung Zoo/Cee4Life continue to boast the success of their kindness and compassion education programs, what impact has it truly made on the lives of the animals they hold captive? 1) Selma and Ira continue to display zoochosis in their pen and paddock. They remain chained inside their pen and whilst they wait to give rides. 2) Bull hooks remain in use despite Bandung Zoo/Cee4life claim that they have been set aside. The picture of Sybelle standing with the zoo's marketing spokesman in Cee4life face book page appears to be nothing more than a publicity stunt. 3) A new bull hook has also been captured on video by a visitor https://www.dropbox.com/s/wip17wfvkrpi120/P1300050.MOV?dl=0 This fish hook like implement certainly makes it easier to stab the elephant’s head with and kept hidden from the public. 4) The tigers continue to pace inside their various filthy enclosures. 5) The sun bears continue to fight for food. Kardit who was driven to madness from over 20 years in captivity continues to sway and pace inside his small enclosure with no enrichment. Kardit was certainly not trying to entertain the visitors to the zoo with his stereotypical behavior. According to Cee4life, they have been assisting since January 2017 and PKBSI has been assisting since May 2016, yet there has been no enrichment provided for the sun bears they claim to love. PKBSI however, does appear to be busy helping Bandung Zoo with their breeding programs. 6) The zoo born babies were touted by the Bandung Zoo/Cee4life as an indication and prove that the zoo is doing better but in reality, these babies will never be rehabilitated and return to the wild population. They were bred to replace older tired animals and will spend their entire lives in captive misery till they die. Zoo born proves nothing, but they do bring in visitors and boost profits for the zoo! Please do not support zoos. The only way zoos will phase out is if people stop visiting them. Be very careful of zoos claiming to be wildlife sanctuaries. There are many worthy animal sanctuaries and conservation organizations that are desperate for your help and support. These organizations do make a real difference to the lives of the animals and habitats for wildlife eg Born Free.
