RECAP: Even though Wildlife Sanctuary in Colorado, US wants to rescue the Sun Bears, Scorpion Wildlife Trade Monitoring does not want to speak with zoo officials to ask them to release the bears for rescue. They said they are trying to get the bears rehabilitated and release back in the wild. However, rescue centers are full and they are trying to get quote to build cages for that and then, will try to speak with zoo to release the bears. I have asked Scorpion how this is going but have yet to receive a response. They said that relocating bears abroad will be last resort and will assist if this happens but Wildlife Sanctuary will have to apply to Dept of Forestry. For those of you wondering if these bears can be bought, please read my earlier update. 1) Meeting on January 26th between Animals For Change Foundation, Scorpion and Animal Asia was very disappointing. They said, “changes take time and removing the bears from the zoo – let alone Indonesia – is not a simple endeavor. Therefore we are trying to work with the zoos throughout the country to provide training and support to enable the strengthening and enforcement of laws that would better protect the welfare of all wildlife being housed in captivity". This response is similar to what I received from Animal Asia last year. 2) Several people contacted animal advocate group Cee4Life in Australia for help and they put out a media release on January 26th 2017 stating that their investigation concluded that the starvation claims is false. To be honest, their article sounded like talking points from the Government and Zoo authorities. I have contacted Cee4Life asking for their methodology in their investigation and if they were physically there to conduct their investigation but have yet to receive any response. 3) I also found it very interesting that Cee4Life said that the male sun bear with his rib cage showing, “Kardit is 23 years old and nearly at the full lifespan age of a sun-bear (25 – 30 years) and has a normal physical condition of a bear this age". I can't help but wonder if the zoo is releasing this information in advance, in case Kardit drops dead. 4) According to Animals for Change, “the problems for the bears and other animals at Bandung zoo are far greater than feeding… The bears are being fed insufficiently and that coupled with no enrichment/ stimulation/ etc. results in grave psychological and physical trauma.” I agree with them 200%. It is animal cruelty! 5) The Indonesian Government receives financial aid from several countries. You can write to your government and insist that they stop providing such aid to a government that enables animal cruelty by not enforcing stricter laws for animal abusers. It is impossible for me to research all the countries. UK in 2011 intended to end aid to Indonesia. Netherlands plans to stop by 2020. Here are four countries still offering financial aid as far as I know. a) Australia’s aid program to Indonesia http://dfat.gov.au/geo/indonesia/development-assistance/pages/development-assistance-in-indonesia.aspx 2015-16 Total Australian ODA Estimated Outcome $379.1 million 2016-17 Bilateral Budget Estimate $296.0 million 2016-17 Total Australian ODA Estimate $365.7 million The Australian Government will provide an estimated $365.7 million in total ODA to Indonesia in 2016-17, including an estimated $296 million in bilateral funding managed by DFAT. b) USA http://beta.foreignassistance.gov/explore/country/Indonesia PLANNEDOBLIGATEDSPENT $179,125,000 PLANNED FUNDING, FY 2017 c) NZ 2015-2016 $18.2M https://www.mfat.govt.nz/en/aid-and-development/our-work-in-asia/indonesia/ Please do not let Cee4Life derail our efforts/movement to bring about change for the animals in Bandung Zoo and all the other zoos in Indonesia. We must keep the pressure on. Please continue to share and let the world know what is happening to the poor innocent animals that are being kept in disgusting hell holes against their will and abused. Please boycott all zoos and, boycott Indonesia. I know some disagree with boycotting Indonesia. Please know that sometimes it is the only way. I am not asking for boycotting of the people of Indonesia. Thanks as always for your continue support!
