Everyone-
I'm happy to report that House members have introduced legislation calling for the cancellation of student loans by executive order. So now our petition has caused two pieces of legislation! I hope you are all pleased and encouraged. In March when we started the petition, we were a voice in the wilderness, and today student loan cancellation by executive order is at the top of the news!
However, there is reason to be concerned. This legislation calls for "Up to $50,000" in loan cancellation, which is unclear, and frankly not helpful to those who have seen their loan balances explode over years or decades to far more than this. Also, the legislation is couched in partisan rhetoric and is being sponsored by Ayanna Presley and Ilhan Omar- two representatives known to represent the far left of the democrats. This becoming a strongly partisan issue, is concerning. We want to get these loans cancelled, not lost in the partisan divide. So spanning that divide is hugely important for us right now.
There is a strong conservative argument to be made for the cancellation of student loans by executive order. We need to get that fact out there before the die is cast!
To that end: We are asking everyone to do 1 simple thing today:
Contact your local media, and tell them to report on the petition. Say that you are from the area, that our petition started this conversation, and that it is a non-partisan issue that we would like to discuss further. Give them our contact info (justice@studentloanjustice.org, (202) 594-1120), a link to this article, and say we are happy to explain all of this, and answer all the tough questions. Do something similar with some national conservative media also. If you set 'em up, we'll knock 'em down!
This is what works, but only when you do your part. We are on the verge of becoming an unstoppable force. Will you please help? It truly does matter, and getting these loans cancelled really does depend upon your efforts.
Good Luck, and Godspeed-
Alan Collinge
