Say something like this:

Mr. Biden,

Your student loan plan isn't working.  There are 55 million people in the country who either have- or are cosigned on student loans.  According to the former head of the federal lending program, 80% of these borrowers are in distress (ie they are either unable to pay, or they are paying and their loan balances are going up).  This is 44 million voters who are losing sleep over their student loans. If your student loan plan was useful for them, this would be showing up strongly in the polls.  It isn't.

You said you were adopting Elizabeth Warren's bankruptcy platform, but you have not yet pledged to issue an executive order on Day One as president directing the Department of Education and its servicers/contractors to stop opposing student loan borrowers in bankruptcy court. This is the minimum these voters need to see to have the certainty to vote for you.

Frankly, however, I don't think this is enough.  The President has the executive authority to cancel federally owned student loans (85% of all student debt) by executive order.  He can do this without needing congressional approval, appropriation, and without adding one penny to the national debt.

It is a failed lending system, Mr. Biden.  The default rate for 2004 borrowers, we now know, is 40%, and these borrowers were only borrowing a third of what students are being forced to borrow today!

The country needs more stimulus.  The wealthy are doing just fine.  Most student loan borrowers, however, are not.  They do not own stock by and large.  In the current pandemic, they are hit particularly hard.

You should strongly consider pledging to cancel federal student loans by executive order. This is the most effective, inexpensive, and obvious way to proceed.

Pledging to return bankruptcy to student loans by EO would be helpful to the 44 million distressed voters who hold them, but pledging to cancel the debt would guarantee victory in November.

Time is getting short, Mr. Biden.  Fortune favors the bold.  Please make one or both of these pledges.  Give us something we can trust.
