Proof that Congress will do nothing meaningful to cancel student loans:

In the most recent stimulus legislation, $10,000/borrower in loan cancellation was called for.  Then, at the last minute, an amendment was introduced that would limit this cancellation to only borrowers who were economically distressed at the beginning of the current crisis.  The reason cited for this amendment was that legislators feared that blanket cancellation would "cost too much". 

This is infuriating on many levels.  First, $10,000 in loan cancellation is practically nothing for most of the people in our group.  Second, the notion that cancelling student loans must be "paid for" is absolute nonsense.  These loans were already paid for by the taxpayers many years ago, and the taxpayers have largely recouped their investment.    An executive order cancelling all student loans will not require one dime from Congress, and would add nothing to the national debt! 

Remember also: if this legislation ever actually made it through to becoming law (in a much weakened form), the Department of Education would then use its sweeping authority to "bureaucratize"  the plan into total meaninglessness!

I could go on for quite some time here, folks, but suffice it to say:  CONGRESS WILL NEVER PASS A MEANINGFUL LOAN FORGIVENESS PROGRAM.

THIS IS WHY OUR PETITION IS SO IMPORTANT!

Please:  Do everything you can to get the media to report on this important petition.  We've already done 6-7 interviews about it, and it has been reported on several times, but we absolutely need more coverage, so as to get more signatures. 

We can easily get these loans gone, folks.  But we ALL have to put in some time and effort to making that happen.  Hundreds of people are doing this.  Join them.  WILL YOU PLEASE DO YOUR PART?
