Hello All, As you can imagine both my brothers, sister and I were on the edge of our seat with the announcement of the 46 commutations that Obama granted on Monday. What a blessing for so many individuals to be granted life outside of prison and the opportunity to return home to their families. After much anxiety, I took a deep breath and reviewed the list of 46 commutations and sadly discovered that my father, William Underwood, did not make the list. However, I am hopeful. Yesterday, at his announcement of the 46 commutations, President Obama stated, "I believe at its heart America is a nation of second chances” and that he intends to grant dozens more commutations. In today's speech at the NAACP Convention, President Obama gave statistical data as to why he intends to use his clemency power more broadly. "America has 5 percent of the world's population, but 25 percent of the world's prisoners … Our incarceration rate is four times higher than China's. We keep more people behind bars than the top 35 European countries combined. Mass incarceration makes our country worse off, and we need to do something about it." Open Society Policy Analyst, Nkechi Taifa writes, "I urge our president as he carefully considers more petitions for clemency to take a hard look at all the William Underwoods languishing behind bars, who may have made serious mistakes in the past but have long since changed their lives and want to rejoin their families and communities. They, too, deserve mercy and compassion. They, too, deserve a second chance." Our Dad, William Underwood, deserves a second chance. The momentum is HIGH on the issue of criminal justice reform and the TIME to ACT is NOW!
