A Powerful Launch Means Leverage -- If We Use It

American Families United

Feb 21, 2017 — The Trump Administration's announcement today of an alarming, mean-spirited attack on vulnerable people was not a surprise to us. But what might surprise them is the impressive launch of our American Families United petition to protect the immigration rights of US citizens. Our message to them is that WE MATTER, that our commitment to our marriages, our spouses and our families must and will be protected. In less than a week, more than a thousand people have signed our petition -- one of the fastest and most powerful responses to a Change.org petition ever.

So the Trump Administration's plans to vastly expand expedited removal didn't catch us napping: it's one more reason we will redouble our efforts, because we know we are going to win. Here is what we need to do:

First, we need more signatures on the petition. Share this with your families, your friends, your churches, mosques and synagogues. Spread the word -- be sure people know that even being US citizens isn't enough to protect our families. The law must be changed -- so, we are working to change it. Ask for people you know to join us, because that's how we will win.

Second, we need more cosponsors for HR 1036, the American Families United Act, our bipartisan legislation introduced in the House of Representatives by Congressman Beto O'Rourke (D-TX) and Steve Pearce (R-NM). Write and call your United States Representatives, give them the bill number, and ask that they cosponsor this legislation and call for hearings on protecting the immigration rights of US citizens.

Third, we need a companion bill in the Senate. So write and call your Senators with the same message. If you need help, have questions, or don't know how to proceed -- email us through our website AmericanFamiliesUnited.org.

We will protect our families -- but playing defense is not enough. We are organizing to change America's immigration laws to reflect American values: no American immigration system can be worth anything if it divides US citizens from their husbands and wives.

Your support successfully launched our AFU petition, which gives us leverage. Now, let's use it.
