Petition to demand the release of human rights defenders in Togo who have become political detainees of the President of the Republic of Togo: Messenth KOKODOKO, Joseph EZA and Assiba K. JOHNSON

On 19 October 2017, the member of the NUBUEKE Movement, in the person of Messenth KOKODOKO was abducted from his home at 5 a.m. by men in civilian clothes and driven to an unknown destination. It was later, that is, two days of research that his relatives discovered that he was in the Intelligence and Investigation Service (SRI). Messenth KOKODOKO had been tortured by receiving blows in the shins until the appearance and flow of blood, this under the orders of the head of the SRI and by elements of the said service. He was the victim of a case of psychological torture in order to obtain a false confession about his Movement on the one hand and about that of the “Front Citoyen Togo Debout”, of which he is a member, on the other. One week after the arrest of Messenth KOKODOKO, two other members of the same movement will follow who, also detained at the Intelligence and Investigation Service, will also be tortured there: Joseph EZA, Vice-President of NUBUEKE, arrested on 26 October 2017.

On Wednesday 04 April 2018, the president of the “Regroupement des Jeunes Africaines pour la Démocratie et le Développement” (REJADD) Assiba K. JOHNSON, was abducted by elements of the Intelligence and Investigation Service in civilian dress without any legal proceedings. He was treated like a robber and driven to the SRI. Initially, the elements took him to his association's headquarters in Gbossimé where they kicked down the doors and took all the documents and computers found at the scene without any search warrant.

During the interrogations, he was subjected to psychological torture like all the other human rights defenders arrested and constantly threatened because of their civic commitment. Since his arrest, he has been accused of publishing false news and defamation, his case is pending in the office of the dean of investigating judges at the Court of First Instance of Lomé. His lawyers filed applications for interim release, which were de facto rejected. 

Despite the demands for the release of all detainees in the context of the political
demonstrations since 19 August 2017 by the mediators of the political crisis in Togo, the government of Togo makes the mediators and the whole opinion believe that these human rights actors are not among the people imprisoned in the context of the protests.

Pétition pour demander la libération des défenseurs des droits de l’homme au Togo devenus des détenus politiques du président de la République du Togo : Messenth KOKODOKO, Joseph EZA et Assiba K. JOHNSON

Le 19 octobre 2017, le membre du Mouvement NUBUEKE en la personne de Messenth KOKODOKO a été enlevé chez lui à 5h00 du matin par des hommes en civile et conduit vers une destination inconnue. Ce fut plus tard, c’est-à-dire deux jours de recherche que ses proches ont découvert qu’il se retrouvait au Service des Renseignements et d’Investigation (SRI). Messenth KOKODOKO avait été torturé en recevant des coups dans les tibias jusqu’à l’apparition et écoulement de sang, ceci sous les ordres du responsable du SRI et par des éléments dudit service. Il a été victime d’un cas de torture psychologique dans le but d’obtenir des aveux mensongers sur son mouvement d’une part et sur celui du Front Citoyen Togo Debout dont il est membre, d’autre part.

Une semaine après l’arrestation de Messenth KOKODOKO, suivra celle de deux autres membres du même mouvement qui, également détenus au Service de Renseignement et d’Investigation, y seront aussi torturés : Joseph EZA, vice président de NUBUEKE, arrêté le 26 octobre 2017.

Le mercredi 04 avril 2018, le président du Regroupement des Jeunes africains pour la Démocratie et le Développement (REJADD)  Assiba K. JOHNSON, a été enlevé par les éléments du Service de Renseignement et d’Investigation en tenue civile sans aucune procédure judiciaire. Il a été traité comme un braqueur et conduit au SRI. Dans un premier temps, les éléments l’ont conduit au siège de son association sis à Gbossimé où ils ont défoncé les portes et emporté tous les documents et ordinateurs retrouvés sur les lieux sans un quelconque mandat de perquisition.

Dans les interrogatoires, il a subi des tortures psychologiques comme tous les autres défenseurs des droits de l’Homme arrêtés et constamment menacés du fait de leur engagement citoyen. Depuis son arrestation, il est accusé de publication de fausses nouvelles et de diffamation, son dossier est pendant au cabinet du doyen des juges d’instruction au tribunal de Première Instance de Lomé. Ses avocats ont introduit des demandes de mise en liberté provisoire qui ont été de facto rejetées.

Malgré les demandes de libération de tous les détenus dans le cadre des manifestations politiques depuis le 19 août 2017 par les médiateurs de la crise politique au Togo, le gouvernement du Togo fait croire aux médiateurs et à toute l’opinion que ces acteurs des droits de l’Homme ne font pas partie des personnes incarcérées dans le contexte des manifestations.
