Yesterday we finally got to mail out our petition to all of the relevant people we have previously mentioned. We sent each a package containing a cover letter, the front of our petition and a disc containing all of your beautiful signatures and comments. We had originally planned to send it ALL printed out on paper but it was a LOT of paper to print just one copy and as we are an environmentally conscious family, we couldn’t go ahead with the complete paper copy. All of the packages were send via Express Overnight Delivery with the signature request. Already this morning we heard back from Senator Fintan Warfield, an Irish Sinn Féin politician who is a spokesperson for youth affairs, LGBT Rights and the arts. We emailed back and forth several times with Senator Warfield when we found out that he had raised, in the Dáil, some months ago, an opinion piece article, relating to some of the issues many families face, similar to our own, and the current loopholes in the legislation. Early today, Senator Warfield informed us that he received our package and that he will be looking to raise our story in a few different platforms in the Oireachtas (National Parliment) when the Dáil (House of Representatives) and Seanad (Senate) return on the week of the 16th of April. This is terrific news for us and a little step forward to where we want to be. We want the Irish Government to be aware of and actively working to fix the loopholes in the Children and Family Relationships Act 2015, which we have already discussed and this will in turn lead to amending laws surrounding passport applications for our daughter and many other children unable to get Irish passports (and birth certificates acknowledging both parents). Hopefully! We can only be hopeful that our petition will mean something and today a massive vibrant rainbow in the sky felt like a positive sign to us. For now, we wait... Amanda and Lesley x
