At least 14 elephants were killed by cyanide poisoning in Zimbabwe recently in three separate incidents and in different parks. These killings took place two years after poachers killed more than 200 elephants by poisoning, Zimbabwe's National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority said Tuesday.
The use of cyanide is an increasingly common tool used by poachers as it is plentiful and easily accessible due to mining operations that take place on the continent.
It is also a particularly pernicious tool, not only because it results in the agonizing death of these magnificent animals, but also because it ultimately results in the death of the vultures that feed on them.
