University of Maryland Students for Justice in Palestine
OFFICIAL STATEMENT ON BDS:
Call to University of Maryland Students and Faculty
In the immortal words of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr: “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” Unfortunately, Palestinians in Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza confront injustice on a daily basis. Innocent children are forced from their homes to make room for Israeli settlers. Checkpoints throughout the region force Palestinians to subject themselves to humiliating searches as they try to exercise the right to visit their own families, go to work, or go to school. White phosphorous, a chemical weapon which kills indiscriminately by burning its victims from the inside, has even been used on civilians in Gaza who have nowhere to run and nowhere to hide. This is injustice. And we, as students at the University of Maryland, wish to break the silence surrounding these events.
Following in the footsteps of Dr. King, the UMD chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine calls upon the administration and student body to stand in solidarity with the citizens of Gaza and the West Bank. We support the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanction (BDS) movement against the Israeli government. We at the University of Maryland have done this before: In 1989, our university boldly stood against South African apartheid by divesting from the institutions which supported racist policies in that country. Our goal is to have our university take a strong stand against injustice again.
Our goal in normalizing and promoting BDS is to put international pressure on Israel to respect the human rights and dignity of the Palestinian people in the same way that it currently supports the human rights of other citizens of the country. As proponents of BDS, we demand Israel end its brutal occupation and settlement of the Palestinian territories. As proponents of BDS, we dream that Jews, Palestinians, and others can join hand in hand as equals under the law. As proponents of BDS, we call for Israel to respect the right of Palestinian refugees to return to their home country from which they are currently exiled, as stipulated by UN Resolution 194. As advocates for universal human rights, this is our goal.
To ensure the safety and equality of Palestinians is to ensure the safety and equality of all.
“The global BDS movement for Palestinian rights presents a progressive, antiracist, sophisticated, sustainable, moral, and effective form of nonviolent civil resistance to apartheid.” Omar Barghouti
