On January 25th, the George-Anne reported on an investigation concerning Dr. Eric Kartchner, the Foreign Languages Department Chair. The report said that “Dr. Kartchner would not allow [Riley] to excuse herself to go to the restroom without permission,” according to the Title IX report. “Dr. Kartchner repeatedly criticized the way [Riley] smelled, indicating he could fire her simply for the way she smelled.”
It is a shame that in an institution of higher learning we still face problems of harassment. Dr. Kartchner, the chair of the Foreign Languages Department, has been accused multiple times of harassment to female faculty while serving in his position. Despite these claims made by multiple faculty members, Georgia Southern University has not taken disciplinary action to address this pressing issue. The Dean of Students ask all incoming students, “Who will you be?” This question is posed in situations of real life discrimination and harassment. The students of Georgia Southern now pose this same question to the administration. Who will you be? Will you sit in silence while your faculty is experiencing this harassment, or will you stand up for justice? This petition calls upon the administration at Georgia Southern to pursue disciplinary action against Dr. Kartchner in whatever way they see fit.
