Preserving Trumper Park for tennis only has become an election issue -ask candidates their position!

Thanks to all of you the petition to preserve Trumper Park Tennis Centre for tennis use only now has over 540 signatures. Please continue to share the petition with people you know who support this cause-because the more signatures the better chance we have of eventually declaring victory in this campaign. 

With local government elections on September 14 our campaign has become an election issue.  I would like to share with you the comment included by  a former Mayor of Woollahra  when signing the petition:

"As a former Mayor of WOOLLAHRA and as a former Paddington Councillor, and as a frequent user of the Trumper Park tennis courts for over 30 years, I am truly disappointed to see the Council propose this change. I am also disappointed to learn that only 1 Residents First Councillor opposed the tender, being the Councillor for Vaucluse!! The courts are really well utilised, and rarely empty. Why would the council deprive local residents of the joy and community that they have found by playing tennis for generations at this facility? The Council should find other areas for other sports and not steal away the existing tennis courts that are so well patronised and clearly providing a facility that is desired by the community. As the old adage goes if it’s not broken, don’t fix it!!! Given the location of the courts i would urge everyone who lives in the Paddington, Cooper and Double Bay wards to write to the candidates for their ward to ascertain their position on this issue and vote accordingly in the up coming council elections."

So, if you are voting in the Woollahra Council election you may wish to ask candidates whether, if they are elected, they will use their vote as a Councillor to keep Trumper Park tennis centre for tennis only.

The Residents First Councillor and candidate for re-election for Vaucluse Ward is Councillor Merrill Witt who alone voted against the Council's   resolution to include provisions in the tender to allow multi-sports use of two of the tennis courts. Councillor Witt has said that if re-elected she will continue to advocate and vote for Trumper Park to remain for tennis only. 

As I mentioned in an earlier update Liberal Candidate for Paddington Alexander Andruska has said that if elected then at the first Council meeting after the election he will move a motion to rescind the Council's resolution to allow multi-sports use of two of the tennis courts.

A number of other candidates have not gone this far,but have said they will take the concerns expressed by the community into account when the results of the tender process are considered by the Council.
