The Monastery chose this location specifically because of the General Rural zoning and the remote and quiet location adjacent to pristine State Land. They have invested tens of millions of dollars in the churches, grounds, and facilities of the monastery, where thousands of people come every month to enjoy this peaceful and spiritual oasis. The proposed rezoning would bring accelerated development that would dramatically change the character of the neighborhood, disrupting the lives of the monks and the viability of the monastery. The developers say they will impose strict CC&Rs to control noise in the actual development, but this will only encourage the new residents to use the easily accessible State Land for recreation including ATVs, shooting, and other loud activities. This would not only disrupt the monastery but also encourage misuse of the State Land Trust. I do intend to appear at the public hearing, and would like to voice my concerns there.
