Preserve Kannada and Protect Government Schools and Colleges in Karnataka
The Issue
As a proud Kannadiga, I want to shed light on a pressing issue - the need to Save Kannada and the government schools and colleges in Karnataka. With the rising trend of educational institutions leaning towards English, we are witnessing the overshadowing of our regional heritage. Languages are the spirit of our culture, and Kannada, as the mother tongue of millions of inhabitants, plays an integral role in preserving the cultural identity of Karnataka.
Government schools and colleges are more than merely learning institutions; they are the bedrock of accessible and equitable education. Unfortunately, numerous government schools and colleges in Karnataka are struggling due to insufficient funds, poor infrastructure, and lack of quality education, affecting the future of many young minds.
Census 2011 data indicated that Kannada, despite being the state language of Karnataka, was spoken by a diminutive 66.46% of the total state population. Additionally, a startling decline in student enrollment in government schools has been noted over the years. According to a survey conducted by the Department of Education, Government of Karnataka, there was a reduction of over 17,000 students in 2020 in public schools.
This draws attention to two major causes, safeguarding our mother tongue and ensuring that the government schools and colleges' quality of education is upgraded. It poses a responsibility on us, the Kannadigas, and everyone else who believes in preserving cultural heritage and promoting equitable access to educational resources.
Let's support the preservation of our beloved language, Kannada. Let's strengthen our government schools and colleges, the pillars of accessible education in Karnataka.
